In this message we'll get at righteousness from an abstract angle. Righteousness in the Old Testament primarily has to do with God. The question, Is God righteous? shows up again and again. It is a question very closely related to, Will God be faithful to God's covenant promises to his people Israel? Will he redeem, restore, vindicate, and create everlasting peace / shalom? This question also loomed large for Paul and is especially evident in his letter to the church in Rome: Romans.

This morning's two-person-readers-theatre-style play imagines Paul speaking with Timothy in Corinth circa AD 54 as he's preparing to write Romans. Paul addresses how God is proved righteous / faithful in Jesus who fulfills Israel's call to be God's chosen for the sake of the world.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed'a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
Romans 1:16-17, NIV

Just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord..
Romans 5:19-20, NIV
