Media @ New Hope CalgaryWe continue our sermon series on God at Work by looking at the vocation of a Firefighter.

“It’s not just adrenaline for the sake of adrenaline, it’s for a purpose; [it’s for] doing something that is meaningful in the preservation of life and property… [Adrenaline enables you to] really invest in the preservation process, physically and emotionally. That you can really work hard at doing that is part of [my] passion for the job.”
A senior Calgary Firefighter

“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Romans 5:8, NLT

“We’re there to be a very practical, pragmatic, disciplined help... and the world needs so much more of this… Sometimes you’re helping people and you’re thinking. ‘This person was an idiot for getting themselves into this situation… they kind of got themselves into it,’ but no matter where you find that person, you’re gonna be there to show them a little bit of compassion and grace and not judge them (at least not on the scene!)”
A senior Calgary Firefighter

“This is how we know what love is; Jesus laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”
1 John 3:16, TNIV

“In a world where there are a lot of talkers, we just “do!” We get to work and we get off that truck and we do what needs to be done.
[Firefighting] is like the ‘verb’ of jobs!”

“A lotta people need a lot of help”

glad the message connected sphman01 - this has been a bit of a new direction for us as a church - preaching people's jobs as though they were embodied parables, spoken in some mysterious way by God. I would love to hear how this sticks with you going forward. I'd be interested to know if and how it changes anything. JVS
