And I suppose there are many other oblique and mysterious ways that God reveals himself. Directly, overheard, but also another kind of overheard. The kind where God is revealing something to another person directly and you overhear.

This is deep Theology, fascinating science, effective liturgy, profound spirituality, and effective evangelism all rolled up into one. Good word, John. And I'm looking forward to the book.

Dear John:

As I heard your "Daybreak Alberta" segment on epigenetics being broadcast throughout the province yesterday I felt obliged to respond.

Theologians don't do good science, mainly because they think that they start with a book containing all the answers (this is something of a faux pas in scientific circles).

To spend a day amateurishly sampling scientific literature, cherry picking a few experimental results and then attempting to imbue your theological perspectives with credibility from them is highly disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.

"Science confirms Old Testament!" - how dare you Sir?!

The expanding sphere of scientific understanding is systematically displacing the fear and ignorance that all superstitious belief systems are rooted in - it's a powerful thing for Theologians to admire from afar - but not for them to participate in...

...just don't go there...

I can't quiet the thought that we may not be able to effectively see & hear God's truth in the general world without some measure of salvation/God's transformative work...that we need "the scales to come off" first so that we can see the truth in front of us. General revelation (God revealed in nature, in each other, in the faint imprint of Him upon us) was not clear enough to transform us. We didn't get it, would totally miss it. We needed something clearer, more blatant. We needed this truth to put on flesh, to talk to us and touch us, to feed us and even to bleed all over the place (Oh,hello Jesus, NOW I see you). Once we give God some leeway within us, then we can begin to truly see, and God is everywhere & is in everything. If we have not yet let God in, I don't think we can see anything really clearly.... not in Coldplay, not anywhere. God transforms our perspective and can speak beauty & truth through Coldplay. Without God's work in us, Coldplay can only get so far.

I've also thought about the quote on p 142 in relationship to predestination vs. human choice. Whatever we believe about predestination, the truth is, in the "bustle and the stampede" we are most aware of our own choices - that is where we live.

Thanks for placing some human framework to this Cardus article in common language. So many big words - so little time. I was floundering at Phenomenologically, tripped on looking up neologism and was down for the count by soteriological. I got side tracked by the history lesson that I found somewhat disturbing and I would have missed the main point of the article had you not so nicely framed it here in your post here. Thank you so much for sharing.

There is a lot of faith outside of the church. We can learn from our fellow man. I believe we are to live our lives as witnesses of our faith. In fact I think everyone lives what they believe. An open mind sees what God has created in each of His image bearers. Common grace what a concept!

Ah, reminds me of a Casting Crowns song lyric; "Jesus is the only way to God but I am not the only way to Jesus". May we be able to get out of His way and let Him work through us. So many times He works in ways we just never saw coming!
